Afterdefeat in 1940, theVichy Frenchregime was allowed to retain 100120,000 personnel in unoccupied France, and larger forces in theFrench Empire: more than 220,000 in Africa (including 140,000 inFrench North Africa),and forces in Mandate Syria andFrench Indochina.
