The war in the deserts of North Africa is often seen as a sideshow, and it is hard to argue that it was crucial to the eventual outcome of the wider war – that was always going to happen in Europe. The men that fought that campaign would become known as the Eighth Army or, more simply, the Desert Rats, and their battles against both the enemy and the inhospitable environment would make them famous.
